Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: What's the longest break you've taken from the Grateful Dead?

what purpose does the constant nitpicking of my posts serve? now i understand if you're doing it in relation to the music. that i encourage. but in this instance, what's the point, other than to stir shit up? or is that your sole purpose?

i AM 24, so you all can continue to be skeptical for whatever nonsensical reason, but like i've said, i don't hide behind masks. i have more integrity than to waste my time making up lies in a place full of mostly jaded old men, most of whom i'll never see in my life.

all this scrutiny has become tiresome. keep it music-related. nothing in my original post was said with any other intention then trying to raise an interesting question. any old fart phraseology was purely coincidental.

edit: just noticed where this post ended up in the thread, and didn't want ARose or WT to think I was talking about them in any way. i'm talking to rob, and i suppose RBNW as well. rob, my only real question i suppose is why the continued scrutiny? i thought you were over it, and i've been enjoying your insightful posts as of late. now you can call me patronizing again!

RB, you can withhold whatever dim-witted response you may have. nobody takes you seriously.

How these things get started is always very hard for me to comprehend. So in an effort to divert things, thought I'd throw this out there. No one should be serious about much of anything in this place.

Finally, something Dennis Leary didn't steal from Bill Hicks.

Anyone who would steal jokes from a dead guy is an ASSHOLE!

Louis CK claims Leary stole the bit from him though:

Just let's be clear about this - I will continue to post whatever I feel like posting, whether it be music related or not, and whether you find this acceptable or not is absolutely no concern of mine. I could care less how old you are - behaving like a dick is not an age-specific trait. If you continue to be a pompous self important little ass who takes himself a great deal too seriously you will continue to be a source of merriment and a target for ragging. Got it?

you have a bad habit of avoiding questions. i had a simple question for you, that was all. that post tells me nothing i don't already know. i do find it highly ironic that you would call me pompous though. thanks for the laugh.

i know that you will continue to rag on people. but like i said, it has become tiresome. when you keep it music-related, or add colorful humor and wit, that's a whole different story. but to go back to my original question, what's the point, if you're not being funny, and just spurting nonsense?

this is a pretty far out concept to you. but perhaps one day, you'll find yourself wondering why you wasted so much time on a GD forum, spewing continual nonsense. i know you don't value much, but what about your own time? if i was 50, the last fuckin' thing i'd want to do would be to waste time bickering with a 24-year old, about boring, meaningless, bullshit that serves no purpose other than to make you look pathetic.

do you have nothing better to do at this point in your old age? do you not mind wasting away in front of a computer, and letting real experiences pass you by, as you dwindle away and wish you'd spent more time doing things of use?

your life must be pretty shitty, or you wouldn't feel obligated to make up for your real-life inequities on the internet. it's a pretty simple and true observation, and i can say with great certainty that your actions here are a form of compensation for your lack-luster life in the real world. it takes a cold person like you to focus solely on what you want in the forums, and ignore the large majority who are here for the fucking music!

you are one of the plagues that has prevented this place from becoming the respectable place it has the ability to. i'm sure you'll take that as a compliment though, you insensitive cunt.

it must give you great comfort every morning to realize that your life only sucks off-line, and that there are a few people here who have high-regard for the all-mighty rob. I don't see any other motivation for you being the prick you are.

once again, you have a terrible habit of avoiding questions that have elements of truth to them. you're either afraid of confronting the truth, or need time to concoct a witty response. if you have any shred of dignity left, you'd attempt to answer my questions. you are making yourself look more pathetic every single day. perhaps you don't have much left to live for.

i'd prefer it if you'd just forget about it at this point. i'm ready to move on from another day's bullshit. you've been boring the shit out of everyone lately rob. if you insist on keeping up your superior, witty, tough-guy, douche bag act, then take a few days off, hone your skills, and come back when you can put together a somewhat amusing rambling.

you don't have your edge anymore, but you're probably not the least bit aware of it. it happens to old people, don't be afraid. everything slowly turns to shit, which you are in the midst of right now. that explains your hostility. but it doesn't explain why at age 50+, someone would want to waste their time doing the things you do. food for thought. going to have a cannoli now.

Let's see. Me (marginal), deniro (newbie), and Ring (not a harsh word for anyone). And You. And all the others before. And all throughout old posts going back years. So many other people and you.

So it really isn't personnel deniro and Ring and all the others. We just strut and fret our moment on the stage. And their will be many after.

And screw all this. This week is Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving Rob. I still think if we were to meet and have a coffee that we wouldn't communicate as we do here. I bet we might even get along. Maybe I would finally get your jokes (or at least the 80% I miss).

"I still think if we were to meet and have a coffee that we wouldn't communicate as we do here. I bet we might even get along."

I find this interesting as well. Anytime I've posted for long enough on a forum, some trivial confrontation is started that could last forever. Make it a face to face conversation, and most likely no confrontation would start in the first place. if it does. it can be settled in minutes, rather than days of bickering.

if i met rab in real life, we'd probably go grab a few pints, and he wouldn't act like the dick he is here. in that case, there's a chance we could actually enjoy each other's company! but if not, we'd quickly tell each other to fuck off, and that would be it.

why can't things be so simple here?

Serious comment, re: "real life" meet ups...I actually think just the opposite. I find the age old notion "would we be friends if we met offline?" interesting, and I answer it very differently.

I am quite confident that I have such divergent views from so many here that I would utterly detest a lg social setting with all of the Forumites.

I had nothing in common with 95% of those at shows (other than the DEAD) and I would guess that other than the "old friends" here (see post by elb), I wouldn't have much in common with many folks here that I haven't had extensive conversations with (I suppose that means MOSTLY the "old boys").

My view is that the web allows us to interact with folks that we would NEVER choose to do so with in the "real" world.

Divergent views do not automatically eliminate the possibility of "getting along". As long as there is some modicum of basic human respect shown by both parties, and there is some convergent point; a meet-up with the sharing of a good beverage(Irish whisky, beer, coffee, etc.)could be enjoyable. But I will agree that it is mostly the "old guys" that I think would make the best company.

And BTW, Beka hasn't checked in at DH since August

Ha--that's a true difference between a newbie and an old fart, Forum Style!

EG, I avoid most all DEAD related posts, and go only for the chit-chat, off DEAD topics, as I completely and utterly exhausted how great 68 was a few yrs back. I suppose I do my share of helping with questions ("how do you convert WAV to MP3?" and such, since so many helped me, I figure I owe them/the Forum/newbies), but you're still young enough in Forum yrs to appreciate the musical threads!

For me, this thread was only important in so far as it got me thinking about the whole "what do 24 yr olds think?" issue (see above). In fact, this actual question has been asked once every six months or so here, thus the actual topic, just like how much I love 68, is really tiresome to me (ie, "tell us about your hiatus from the DEAD").

Amen. Testify Brother Tell!

How many Deadheads does it take to change a lightbulb - or a forum thread?

101. 1 to change it, and 50 to claim it burned brightest on 10/12/68 and another 50 to vehemently argue it was 2/14/68 on which it burned brightest.

Honestly, I do not know what most of your post means. The old boys club here is tiresome. Seriously: if you guys are tired of talking about the Grateful Dead, you just might consider that some other people AREN'T, and that's why people might sign on to a forum labeled "Grateful Dead"? It is not a boring echo loop for all of us. New people here have no way of knowing that the old regulars here consider it "their" forum and new people have to talk about what they want to talk about or else be relentlessly hazed.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: What's the longest break you've taken from the Grateful Dead?

Hey D. This forum has been going now for just about 6 years and before that it was mixed within the LMA forum so some people have been posting here a lot longer. Needless to say many ideas for threads, especially these polling time threads have been done before. In fact for the last few years i can't say that there have been many threads that have been initiated that are really all that original. It is why i don't start many any at this point. I can't think of a good question to ask or have new insights into the band. However through all that time, some friendships have been forged thus people still come to meet with their friends, many whom they will never meet face to face. So the old boys network is more of a an old friends network and i think that is why many people still hang here. Does it give them the right to act like trolls, especially when a thread is relevant to the topic? Not at all. However this thread had almost nothing to do with the grateful dead. It had to do with the listening habits of the individuals who participate in this forum and i think when you are asking about the people in this forum you are more likely to get hijacked by people in this forum. I asked a question about the band last week and every response was on subject. I don't think its because i have been posting here for a few years and have friends here, because not everyone agreed with my opinion. I don't envision you as an old boy, however i don't think your threads about finding some great JGB show ever get hijacked so I don't believe this is a case of hazing. I think this 24 year old brings a lot of heat on himself. When PatKelleyPA questioned the point of one these polls (worst song ever or something like that), rdeniro thought the appropriate response was to ask how Pat's rehab was going. So if someone disagrees with you they must have fallen off the wagon? Taking a shot at someone's real life struggles is in imo a much more egregious shot than knocking someone's unusual style of writing. And it is unusual for a 24 year old to write this way. I spend most of my days with students who are between 24-30 and none of them communicate to me like they are old. They usually communicate to me that I am old! Additionally, if i may go old school on you, when this forum started there were some kids who were much younger than 24 that posted regularly here and their posts were not only not picked on, they were highly appreciated and respected. Look up the name Max Chorak if you want an example of how people at this forum can interact in a perfectly appropriate with younger folks.

You couldn't have interpreted that any worse. No ill-intentions at all behind that.

As for Max Chorak, there are many reasons he wasn't picked on that I don't have the desire/time to discuss.

I am who I am, and won't be changing in any attempt to please the overly critical bunch. There's still enough people that appreciate my additions here that relate to music, and I couldn't give a fuck what the others think.

yes i did. it's called reaching out. i suppose nobody here helps people. what crazy idea? many people are very open to talk about it and a lot of good often results. i understood that it's a sensitive topic for some, which i why i said to just ignore me if he didn't want to respond, and that i'd understand.

it wasn't in the middle of a rag fest. i thought the ragging was over, but that's besides the point. it wasn't harsh bickering, and i didn't think me or anyone else was too serious about it. that's why i added "on a more serious note.."

i've brought up rehab to many people. almost all of them are happy that you asked them and care how they are doing.

interpret it however the fuck you want. you don't know what you're talking about in this instance, so i suggest you rant somewhere else now.

well then you can't not include all the people i've asked who responded very favorably. and in that case, i would have you beat, but i really don't caree.

my point was that most people you ask that to, if they know you've had problems of your owe, are very open to discussions about it which can often be very rewarding for one if not both parties. i took my chances, and pat wasn't one of those people.

if you notice i still wished him well after he came back and insulted me. so obviously i never had any ill-intentions. it's ludicrous to think that i did.

I think what we need here is intervention from that all-important superhero, the Telepathic Fly on the Wall.

The ability to turn into a Telepathic Fly on the Wall is a very important super-power. It enables you to (a) see everything that happened during a particular past event, and (b) know exactly what was in the other person's mind.

That way, when someone says, "That was rude" (or mean or whatever), and someone else says, "I didn't MEAN to be rude," and the other person says, "Yes you DID, because you did yaddy-yah," and the first person says, "No I DIDN'T, because that's not what happened at ALL, I didn't do yaddy-yah I did higgledy-bop," the Telepathic Fly on the Wall can sweep in and solve it all!

Sadly, although I know about this super-power, I don't seem to have it. Anyone else? It could be so very useful, in so many circumstances, virtual and otherwise.

(See the advantage of posting from another time zone? I get to come in after the smoke is cleared and make silly comments, and probably no one will shoot me down. If they do, I'll cry. And then the girls will leave the locker room. And then you boys will be all alone with Rob and Dire -- I mean, I don't really know Dire, but I've heard about him -- so THEN see you how like it. Hah.)

If you make a smartass post in the forum and there's no one there to read it, is it still annoying?

Unbridled smartassedness from the UK to Kathmandu in a single click. Scary.

I prefer to think of my posts as perceptive and full of hidden yet sharply observed truths. Or at least truthiness. I mean, it really would be useful to have a Telepathic Fly on the Wall superpower. Except that some smartass would come along with a fly swatter. What a world, what a world.

It's scary when the boys in the locker room are armed. Fortunately, I'm from The Land of Many Cows, so I believe I can produce distractions that will enable me to make my escape. (When all else fails, harken back to esteemed forum traditions.)

Armed and extremely innocuous - provided you're properly inoculated against the deadly smartass forum-flu that does the rounds every now and then (I think it started with some chick in Asia :-) ). Me, I'm a carrier so I've got natural immunity.

hey rdenirojb87,

Can you post an actual photo of yourself here?
Have you actually traded any CD's with any forumites here?
Have you met any forumite's in person?
Or sent/received any private emails?
Do you have any forumite Facebook friends?

Just curious, most of the "oldies" here have done one or several of the above and proved themselves "real people" warts and all.

I've done all the above, whoop dee do! lol

Hey Rasta--you know me and my need for remaining "incognito", but FWIW, most folks joined Hook at one time or another, and that is where I went many a time to send private emails for addy's to send CDs, and such...

Or the old "up for a moment and gone" approach here works too.

Not that I am suggesting a round of group hugs is about to break out or anything...but I've only posted pics of my dogs here; Dire called me a "sally" for not using the real me too! Mean ol dog--he later said he was drunk, and since he told me, I can say it, right?

What a git.

What else am I here for, eh?

i like putting a face to all the names here so i like that idea in that sense. i could care less about disproving who i am. i already know who i am, and any sensible person knows as well. but, i'd like to see what everyone else looks like to. so start a thread where everyone posts there pic and i'll follow suite.

A simple yes or no to each of the above would be insightful.
Just a wild guess is that 5 X No, equals...?

There are LOTS of forumites here who HAVE posted personal photo's and have had real life meetings, who trade CD's, who email each other, who share Facebook pages.

I can send out an email en mass to @20 established GD Forumites. BFD, but I can.
I share Facebook with 4 forumites...BFD, aye?

You are the mystery person who posts to almost every GD thread.

can you start one of those threads? i'll be the bad guy if i do so. i got nuttin to hide. i'll post pictures of my whole damn family.

Have you actually traded any CD's with any forumites here?
not yet. almost made a trade yesterday for a cash album, but then realized i had a copy of it. i haven't been very actively participating here until the last few months, so there haven't been many opportunities presented for trading. i'd love to help others out with with my vast catalogue of music, but nobody has asked me yet.

Have you met any forumite's in person?
only been actively posting here for a few months, but i will probably get the opportunity to do so at some point.

Or sent/received any private emails?
yes, but they are private

Do you have any forumite Facebook friends?
i'm not really a facebook guy, so no. i have a facebook, but very rarely use it for anything other than to send a quick message to someone whose phone number or e-mail i don't have.

happy?

I cant help but feel bad for Ring. Perhaps the hook would be a better place for her? As for rdeniro, I completely agreed with you until I re-read the original thread and he did say "on another more serious note" so perhaps he deserves the benefit of the doubt? He still shouldn't have brought that up, but that's not the first time someone has questioned someone's sobriety around here is it? Micah accused Rob of the same not too long ago and there's been many other instances as well.

FWIW Tell, I cant understand half of yours posts either!

whatever you believe, my question about rehab was the only sincere inquiry as to how someone else who's struggled with addiction is doing, because i honestly did care. and i've helped others in his situation. i believe other times a similar question was asked, it was not done with good intentions. i can see how some may think my question was too blunt, but it was meant in a good way. and in my experience, that question is not out of line. tell that to the people i've helped. ok i've had enough of all this. i believe there's some music somewhere on the site. i'll go check out some of that.

I thought I was defending you but you're doing your best to prove Tell is correct. So if Pat Kelly responded to your post saying "this is the best post here in years, I hate Mexicali" would you have responded "Thanks, Pat, btw how's your rehab going?"

I dont think so...

yes, i honestly would have, but in different words. and i don't fucking care if you don't want to believe me. it was something i'd wanted to ask him, and i planned on inquiring about it regardless the circumstances.

if i was doing it to be a dick, why would i follow up and say that i still wish him luck, after he came back and insulted me again? is it really that hard to believe that i'm a nice person who likes helping others? must be an incredibly foreign concept around here. get your head out of your asses. for the last fucking time, i have never told a single lie here and never will. so continue to waste time nitpicking away, but it's a waste of fuckin' time.

Hey BD--yeah, I hear ya; re: Ring...that's why I persisted in this, per usual, "no win" situation. Flies on the wall aside, I have had enough exchanges with un-named but obvious poster that I simply ignore now, and should've followed that, my own, advice, but I have seen too many examples of "oh...I didn't mean that" when there is really no other way to interpret it. If it's my bad, then, there ya have it; but, once I do it with a poster 3 or so times, then I say, "enough's enough", and write them off. Unfortunately, there really are folks that post things without thinking, then make excuses, upset folks, and so on.

I for one, am no doubt in that category at times, but other than my writing skills leaving you scratching your head, I assume you have a fairly strong sense of "who is Tell?" in the sense of "what kind of person", and that's all that I can be responsible for...

As for missing what I write--elb always sez it's the abbreviations, and writing too fast (I really do just spew this out at ~ 50 words a minute without looking back, no spell ck...I mean, anything else would be "work", eh?).

Perhaps all this is inevitable since we're talking about a group that is historical, not live now. Even with a group we all feel this strongly about, since they don't make new music there are only so many topics to be covered, and after they've been covered a few times, posters turn on each other.

I guess I am an outlier - I am not one of the youngsters, yet I am also not one of those folks who saw them 900 times and are too jaded to bother with younger people who didn't see them and inevitably come across naive, even annoying. I am an oddball, I did see them way back when but I didn't get really excited about them until recently, so I have not had all these conversations dozens of times over the years. Maybe if I had, I would be intolerant of these conversations, too.

I just don't see why we have to eat our young here ... as to whether he is really 24 or not, I really don't even understand the significance of that. People are always implying people are really someone else ... talk about a boring echo loop ...

Why don't you mention how often many of the old boys help folks out with questions? I still do this at least once a week.

I think you are taking this interaction way too seriously.

Check this thread and decide for yourself if deniro doesn't bring this stuff on himself:

Read that and tell me he is serious about not meaning anything by asking Pat K about his rehab...that was utterly uncalled for.
